Karaburun Peninsula is Albania’s first marine national park — 16 km of uninhabited limestone ridge separated from the mainland by a single road, facing Italy across 70 km of open sea. The full-day boat tour from Vlorë is the only way most travellers will ever see it. We did the full 8-hour version. Here’s whether it earns the day.

What Exactly Happens On This Tour?

The boat leaves Vlorë harbour at 9am on a larger vessel than you’ll find further south — these run 40–60 passengers, not the 10–12 seat speedboats out of Himarë. First stop is Sazan Island, a former Yugoslav-era military zone only recently opened to limited visitor access; you’ll see abandoned bunkers alongside genuinely clear water. From there the boat runs the length of the Karaburun ridge to the Haxhi Aliu Cave, then works south through a series of swim coves that see a fraction of the boat traffic Ksamil or Himarë do. Lunch is served on board, and the return to Vlorë is mid-to-late afternoon.

Honest Breakdown: The Pros & Cons

The Good Stuff

  • The scale is bigger than anywhere else on the Riviera — a genuine national park, not a coastal cove.
  • Sazan Island access is unique to this tour; you can’t reach it another way.
  • Water clarity at the coves is the best on the coast.
  • Lunch included takes the logistics out of an 8-hour day.

The Bad Stuff

  • It’s a serious time commitment — 7–8 hours on the water, most of it not stopped.
  • Getting to Vlorë from Himarë, Dhërmi or Ksamil is itself a half-day drive.
  • Larger boats mean less flexibility and a more crowded deck than the Himarë speedboats.
  • Only runs June through September, and less frequently than the Himarë or Saranda tours.

Final Verdict: Should You Book It?

Book it if you’re already based in Vlorë, want to see Albania’s only marine national park, or have a full free day and don’t mind the commitment — Sazan Island and the Haxhi Aliu Cave aren’t reachable any other way. Skip it if you’re staying anywhere from Himarë south: the drive to Vlorë alone eats half a day, and our Himarë speedboat covers similarly dramatic cliff scenery in a third of the time. Thinking bigger than a day tour?

Prefer to reach Karaburun and Sazan on your own schedule?

A private day charter or short yacht itinerary can work the Karaburun coastline without the fixed 9am departure or the 60-passenger boat — anchor at coves the group tour skips, and pair it with the Croatian and Montenegrin coast if you’re extending the trip. Our sister site Adriatic Yacht Guide compares bareboat, crewed and day-charter options across Albania, Croatia and Montenegro.
