Most of Albania’s fame is Ionian — Ksamil and the Riviera coves — but the country’s coast runs much further north into the Adriatic, where the beaches turn long, flat and sandy. This is the family end of Albania’s coast: warm, shallow water, soft sand, and an easy drive from Tirana. Here’s the Adriatic coast for 2026, south to north.

Quick Answer
For the nicest sandy stretch, head to Lalzit Bay north of Durrës. For easy family beaches close to Tirana, Durrës and Golem; for a wilder, dune-backed feel, Shëngjin’s Rana e Hedhun and the Divjakë–Karavasta national park; and for the far north, Velipojë. Sandy, shallow and warm — the opposite of the Riviera’s clear pebble coves, and much easier with young kids.
Where the Coasts Meet: Vlorë
Vlorë marks the point where the Adriatic meets the Ionian. South of the city the water turns clear and the Riviera begins; north of it, the long Adriatic sands run all the way to Montenegro. It’s the natural pivot between the two coasts — more in our Vlorë destination guide and Sarandë vs Vlorë.
The Best Adriatic Beaches
1. Lalzit Bay (north of Durrës)
The Adriatic’s most polished stretch — a long curve of soft sand backed by pine, with a cluster of newer resorts, beach clubs and villa developments. The closest Albania’s sandy coast gets to a designed, upscale family-and-couples beach, and only about an hour from Tirana.
2. Durrës & Golem
Albania’s biggest, busiest beach city: kilometres of shallow sandy beach running south through Golem and Mali i Robit, lined with hotels, bars and sunbeds. Lively, built-up and cheap — not for solitude, but easy, warm and family-friendly, and 40 minutes from Tirana.
3. Divjakë–Karavasta
More nature reserve than resort — a long wild sandspit inside Divjakë-Karavasta National Park, fronting Europe’s largest lagoon and home to a colony of Dalmatian pelicans. For a beach day combined with birdlife and pine forest, it’s unique on this coast.
4. Shëngjin & Rana e Hedhun
A long sandy resort beach on the north coast, busiest with Kosovo holidaymakers, with the striking Rana e Hedhun (“thrown sand”) dunes nearby — a rare dune-and-hill landscape that’s among the most distinctive beach scenery in Albania.
5. Velipojë
Far north near Shkodër: a wide, shallow, sandy family beach with warm water and a relaxed, local holiday feel, plus the Viluni lagoon and its birdlife just behind. The last major beach before the Montenegro border — and an easy add-on to a Shkodra Lake and Albanian Alps trip.

Getting There & Around
The Adriatic coast’s advantage is access — Durrës and Lalzit Bay are under an hour from Tirana, the north (Shëngjin, Velipojë) 1.5–2 hours. A rental car is the easiest way to hop between beaches; the A1/A2 motorways make it simple. See our car rental guide.
